International Conference

Climate Change: Impacts and Responses in Central and Eastern European Countries

November 5-8, 2005, Pecs, Hungary

 
  


The Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Hungarian Ministry of Environment and Water, and the Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe is organizing an international conference on climate change focusing on the impacts and responses both in mitigation and adaptation in Central and Eastern Europe. The Conference will take place on the 5-8 November 2005 at the Regional Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Pécs, Hungary. It will be as a “satellite” event of the World Science Forum to be held 10-12 November 2005 in Budapest, Hungary. The language of the conference will be English.

Aim of the Conference

The risk of climate change has unanimously been accepted by international and national organizations. The causes of the change are attributed to natural and anthropogenic effects. Extensive research is being carried out worldwide to determine the tendencies of the expected changes to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases and assess their impact to be able to work out response strategies.
The study of the climate change as well as methods of response require the mutual knowledge of international experience and the identification of possibilities of new areas of cooperation. This conference hopes to promote this. The conference will comprise plenary meetings and five sessions:

  1. Global observation and modelling
  2. Regional models and forecasts
  3. Climate change and health
  4. Mitigation needs of greenhouse gases emissions
  5. Adaptation policies and response strategies

Proposed schedule of the conference:

November 5, 2005 (Saturday): Arrival, registration, welcome
November 6, 2005 (Sunday):  
    am Opening, plenary lectures
    pm Session meetings
November 7, 2005 (Monday): Session meetings
November 8, 2005 (Tuesday):  
    am Closing plenary session
    pm (1:00-3:00) Visit to the World Heritage Site of Pecs
    pm (3:00-6:00) Excursion to South Baranya County
November 9, 2005 (Wednesday): Departure

There is no registration fee for the conference. Around 120 participants are invited to take part. Accommodation costs, local transfers will be covered by the organizers, furthermore meals will be provided during the conference. However, no international travel costs will be paid, it is to be financed by the participant. Those who are interested in the conference are encouraged to fill the registration form and send back to the name and address indicated on the form.

This announcement is to call for papers, as well. Please indicate on the registration form, whether presentation is to be held and propose, which session is relevant.
Abstracts will be reviewed and selected by the Program Committee chaired by Prof. Dr. Rudolf Czelnai, Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Participants will be informed about the selection by 30 August, 2005. The presentation is to be held in English and limited for 15 minutes.
Participants are invited to come mostly from Central and Eastern Europe, but limited number of participants will be accepted from other countries, as well. The conference will provide an opportunity to share knowledge and experience among different stakeholders including scientists, policy makers, representatives of business sector and NGOs.

Author Instructions

Papers are invited on the topics outlined in defining the sessions. Abstracts of no more than 300 words should be submitted in English. Abstract should clearly state the purpose, results and conclusions of the final paper. Accepted papers will be presented at the conference. Deadline for submitting the registration form and abstract is July 30, 2005. Notification on approval will be sent through August 30, 2005.
