Environment and Security

A dinner debate on the best solutions in the area of environment and security was held on November 13 in the European Parliament. The event was hosted by Elisabetta Gardini, Member of the European Parliament, in cooperation with the REC and with the support of the Italian Trust Fund.

The goal of the event was to identify innovative models and methods for cooperation in approaches to the major environment and security issues of today. MEPs and representatives of the EU institutions, national governments and companies contributed to the discussion.

The event was organised back-to-back with a conference of the Environment and Security Initiative (ENVSEC) on November 13, at which senior experts and politicians focused on issues in Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the Caucasus.

The REC, as an active partner in the ENVSEC Initiative — chaired in 2008 by Marta Szigeti Bonifert, executive director of the REC — and as a dedicated facilitator of regional sustainability processes, used this opportunity to create a multistakeholder forum allowing participants to garner new knowledge and to meet experts in this important field.

The key speakers at the event — Gloria Visconti, senior expert, the Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea; Zita Gurmai, member of the European Parliament; Tom Spencer, vice-chairman, the Institute for Environmental Security; Louis Bono, counsellor for energy, environment, science & technology, the US Mission to the EU; Jesse Scott, programme leader, E3G Third Generation Environmentalism — focused on ways to apply and spread the use of these innovative and existing tools. The heated debate that followed the speeches was moderated by Ronald A. Kingham, director of the Institute for Environmental Security.
