IV Regional LEAP Conference Held
in Belgrade’s Sava Center on April 10-11

 
  

Perspectives of Urban Development and Environment in South Eastern Europe (SEE)

The Serbia and Montenegro country office of the Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe (REC) hosted a regional conference about local environmental action plans (LEAPs) on April 10-11. The conference was part of the project Assisting Community Development through Addressing Environmental Planning Issues, which is supported by the Swedish Agency for International Development Cooperation (Sida).

In his opening speech, Minister of Science and Environment Protection Aleksandar Popovic stressed the importance of coordinated efforts in environmental planning between the state administration and the REC. Mr. Popovic also noted that activities enhancing sustainable development of local communities are among the top priorities of Serbia and Montenegro’s government.

More than 60 participants contributed project results after three years of implementation. They included local government representatives from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Serbia and Montenegro, as well as the REC’s executive director, Marta Szigeti Bonifert, REC country office directors, representatives of international organisations: Ms. Helen Holm, high representative of SIDA, Mr. Christos Gofas from the European Agency for Reconstruction, and representatives of the Swedish Embassy in Belgrade.

Building on previous success, the partnership between the REC and Sida was strengthened via an agreement to implement the four-year project: SECTOR: Supporting Environmental Civil Society Organisations in South Eastern Europe. The contract amounts to EUR 3.5 million and aims to build capacities in the civil sector of five countries of South Eastern Europe.
