The Balkan Information Service of the Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe (REC) offers the following support to its stakeholders:
 

Reference services

The Balkan Information Service maintains a unique collection of regionally focused information on:

  • all current REReP projects;
  • environmental legislation;
  • successful examples of public participation;
  • progress in the implementation of multilateral agreements and protocols;
  • institutional and policy trends;
  • national and local environmental action plans;
  • EU accession and legal compliance;
  • the stabilisation and association process (SAp);
  • state-of-the-environment and environmental indicators;
  • use of economic instruments;
  • stakeholders and key players in South East European environmental protection; and
  • environmental events.

The REC library houses information on these and many other  topics. With a resource collection of 4,200 books, 4,800 pamphlets, 150 periodicals, 150 video cassettes and 250 reference guides, the REC library maintains the largest collection of English-language environmental publications in Central and Eastern Europe. Searching for these publications is easy in our library catalogue.

Support to regional networking and cooperation

The Balkan Information Service publishes and maintains a number of regularly updated databases and directories to encourage information and know-how exchange, cooperation and networking among environmental stakeholders from South Eastern Europe (SEE). These include:

  • REReP Beneficiaries and Benefactors Directory
    Over 250 key contacts are listed within governments, international organisations (NGOs), non-governmental organisations, media and academia involved or interested in the REReP process and its implementation. Browse the full directory.
  • Directory of Funding Sources for Environmental NGOs
    More than 100 funding sources are listed for environmental projects and capacity building, intended to help regional NGOs diversify their donor base and strengthen their activities. Search the directory.
  • Government and Environment Directory
    An up-to-date resource containing information for national governmental authorities and governmental agencies with environmental responsibility in SEE and EU accession countries. Search the directory.
  • Calendar of Events
    A catalogue of local and regional environmental events such as conferences, seminars, workshops and exhibitions taking place or related to South Eastern European countries. Search the calendar of events.
  • Directory of Environmental Information Centres, Resources and Services
    A list of contacts and profiles of the major collections of environmental information freely accessible to the public across Central and Eastern Europe. Search the directory.

Monthly news brief

Green Horizon was a monthly, electronic news brief published by the Balkan Information Service for summarizing SEE environmental news and progress in the implementation of REReP projects from around the region. The last number of the monthly news brief was issued at the end of 2002. Since June 2004 greenHORIZON is the title of REC’s quarterly magazine.
 

Clearinghouse mechanism

All stakeholders included in the REReP Beneficiaries and Benefactors database have been added to a distribution list and will receive REReP-related publications and materials. All posted materials are pre-paid.
