| Project Summary: |
Bosnia and Herzegovina has long been the crossroads of many
civilizations and cultures. It is these centuries of cultural
diversity that has melded Bosnia and Herzegovina into one of the
fascinating, interesting and beautiful countries in Europe.
Herzegovina is representative of the many countries posed with the
challenge of eco-friendly development in times of transition. Rich in
natural resources and beauty, BiH must find responsible means of
promoting and protecting its vast natural wealth. In the south of
Herzegovina, not far away from the ancient Roman settlement near
Capljina, is Hutovo Blato, the famous settlement of migratory birds.
This National Park has been a shelter for hundreds of species of birds
and game. Its waters are rich in eel, carp and other fresh water fish.
Many of the tourists visiting Mostar and Medjugorje (catholic
pilgrim) stop here for a photo-safari and to enjoy the magic of
nature and the taste of its famous cuisine. The park is ideal for
hunting and fishing, and passionate huntsmen from all over Europe come
during the hunting season. The Mediterranean climate makes it the
warmest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina with mostly sunny days and
clear blue skies. The Neretva turns the dry arid surroundings green
with figs, kiwis, grapes, pome granites, rose hips, and even mandarins
and lemons. The fertile grounds along the entire Neretva valley have
made it a settlement dating back over 10,000 years. Main aim of the
project is development of eco tourism by using eco-tourism potentials
in Herzegovina with involvement and education of stakeholders, through
trainings, field visits, tours etc. Results of the project will be
available through publications, brochures, and various materials
targeting the eco- tourism development. |

| Project Summary: |
The media sector - broadly defined -
could become the dominant industry of the 21st century. No other
industry will so powerfully influence how people and politicians think
about sustainable development (SD) priorities. BiH public at large
needs to be informed and introduced with state of Environment in BiH
as well as SD initiatives. That could be achieved following the
actions described: The ways in which media people perceive, prioritize
and cover these issues; Governance, accountability and transparency
challenges for the media industry itself; The roles of the media in
building sustainable development (SD) agendas for business. Progress
with sustainable development requires the involvement of all sectors
of society, not just business – and much longer timescales. Lack of
environmental journalists and Environmental information is specific
for BiH (as a country that came out from war). Project objectives are
targeting education of journalism students (final year) through
various educative programmes (Introduction of current
legislation/convention (e.g. Aarhus Convention), state of art, country
strategies etc.), which will be done in cooperation with professors
(natural sciences, agronomy, hydrology), environmental NGOs and “Greenvision”-
association for adventure tours. Their role will be to arrange field
visit to nature-polluted areas (wild waste disposals, hydropower
plants etc) and after site visit to draft reports about problems,
threats and possible solutions. Goals of the project are: To create
well-educated group of young journalists in the future, to create
platform for establishment of “National Environment PRESS Center for
BiH (NEPCBiH)”, creation and development of training agenda for
education of journalism students about sustainable development and
environment in general. |

| Project Summary: |
The National Park Kozara has been
established in 1967 on the surface of 3375ha. Its primary purpose was
aimed at protection of natural and cultural/historic values of the
site and surrounding area. However, the management practice
(especially in the recent couple of years since the war in Bosnia) was
never based on sustainable principles but rather on scarce and
insufficient preservation efforts. The project primarily focuses on
the concept of sustainable management of Kozara National Park
(protected area) in the future. The sustainable management practices
will focus on promotion of natural and environmental-friendly tourism.
The project activities described below would be implemented with help
and support of the project partners including the Ministry for Trade
and Tourism of RS and the National Park public management authorities
(enterprise). These activities will incorporate several important
methods in order to achieve project results such as: Education through
seminars and workshops, promotion public and substantive media
coverage (display of cultural and historic trades and values),
information material (brochures and postcards), etc… Main goal is
sustainable management of the Kozara National Park (protected area).
Some of the objectives are raising environmental awareness and culture
of tourism in local population, protection of cultural and natural
heritage of the Kozara, development of receptive tourism of the Kozara
mountain range. |

| Project Summary: |
With the process of rapid
industrialisation in BiH, particularly between1970 and 1990, village
settlements and small towns saw a large emigration of young people to
bigger cities and industrial areas. This has removed one of their most
important factors for economic development, an active workforce. BiH
has no strategy for the revitalisation of rural areas. This project
will try to minimise this emigration through various activities, and
support the development of favourable conditions for development in
their own areas. The projects results will be:
- Models developed for small business development
in rural areas;
- Capacity Assessment on sustaining life in rural
areas;
- A brochure on “Models of sustainable development
of villages (in the area); and
- Contributions to a strategy on returning to rural
areas.

| Project Summary: |
This initiative to develop organic
agriculture in BiH was started in 2000 by ECON, which is still a key
local organisation in the field. So far, a lot has been achieved: Many
local producers and processing companies have been certified by KRAV –
a reputable Swedish certification organisation; a local certification
body has been formed; cooperation has been established with similar
initiatives in Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia and Montenegro; and so on.
The weak link in the process of developing organic agriculture is,
however, the lack of education of farmers. The
Main goal of this project is to promote sustainable agriculture by
providing assistance to the operators (farmers) during the first
transition year, and proper information and technical know-how to
achieve positive results. This will involve trainings (in the field)
and workshops. After the series of trainings, farmers and trainers
will draft a manual on implementing organic farming practices, which
will be distributed to all interested Farmer’s Cooperatives in the
county. The sustainability of the project will be shown through the
continuation of training education conducted by newly educated
farmers/trainers. |
