  Viable NGO Development

Pig, dog and scale (illustration)TheREC's NGO Support Programme has determined that long-term financial and institutional viability of NGOs is a continuing problem. As a result, the REC has been working to develop various projects that support the development in NGOs becoming institutionally strong and financially stable. The development of these methods of support are a long-term aim and represent a new area for the REC.

In 1997 the REC hosted an NGO donor conference that addressed issues pertinent to the future sustainability of the region's NGOs. This led to the REC's involvement in the Sustainable NGO Financing Project (SNFP), which endeavours to assist NGOs in developing a broader, more sustainable financial base. The main findings of this work can be seen in the publication Planning For Sustainability: Supporting NGO Self-financing Ventures (116 pp., 1.1-Mbyte PDF file). The REC has learned from this process and is looking to extend this type of consultation and support to more countries in the region. The project was presented at the International Venture Philanthropy Forum in October 2001.

The REC is also looking to further develop its institutional development support (Viable NGO Development). The aim of the NGO Support Programme is to offer long-term development support for CEE NGOs. For more information please contact:
