The Brundtland Report, the pioneering work in the field of sustainable development, defines it as: "fostering development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." Sustainable development recognises the interdependence of environmental, social and economic systems and promotes equality, justice and social improvement through public empowerment and a sense of global citizenship. NGOs in the Balkans, as elsewhere in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), can play a crucial role in promoting sustainable development. Awareness of the fact that the demands of the environment and economic development are not mutually exclusive must be raised. CEE countries must also realise that they have a chance to construct modern and prosperous societies that maintain un-spoilt landscapes and countryside.
