Improving the Practices of Public Participation:

Next Steps in Implementing
the Aarhus Convention

National level activities

At the national level, the project has been reaching out to officials of those ministries, agencies, and municipalities that may conduct activities with a potentially significant impact on the environment, and therefore may have responsibilities under the Aarhus Convention. Efforts have been made to bring about legislative, institutional, and practical recommendations leading to improvements in public participation, including transparency and efficiency in decision making. This is being achieved through regional workshops, and capacity-building workshops on the Aarhus Convention and public participation, customised to fit country-specific conditions.
