City Towards EU Compliance Award 2001

The 2001 Award focused on implementation of EU environmental legislation and on selected priority areas based on the Sixth Environmental Action Programme: "Our Future, Our Choice". The environmental programme establishes objectives and actions for the next ten years and beyond. The award is divided into three parts, the so-called "three I's":
  • Implementation of EU environmental legislation in areas (air, water and waste) where most of the investments need to be done at the local level.
  • Integration of environmental concerns into other policies.
  • Information and environmental education for citizens and other stakeholders.

From among approximately 2400 cities, which received applications in 2001, 122 cities participated in the competition. The recognition certificates were presented to the best cities in two categories:

The full winners - for outstanding progress in three particular important fields:

  • Implementation of European Environmental Legislation on Air, Waste, and Water
  • Integration
  • Information and Environmental Education

The sectoral winners - awards for progress achieved in one of these components.

In addition, the finalist diplomas were handed to other towns with top scores as finalist from the evaluation.

The awarding ceremony for the City Towards EU Compliance Award 2001 took place on 27 November 2001 in Brussels.
