The first Regional EIA Workshop for CEE and NIS was organized at the premises of the UNEP PAP/RAC in Split, Croatia. The meeting was attended by qualified representatives of Croatia, Estonia, Hungary, Kyrgyz Republic, Latvia, the Russian Federation, and Slovenia, and by the representatives of the REC, EAP Task Force at OECD, UN ECE, UNEP, WHO and the PAP/RAC. The meeting assessed and discussed the present state of application of EIA in CEECs, defined the objectives for the work of the Initiative, and, defined the activities to be implemented as immediate follow up.
The second Regional EIA Workshop for CEE and NIS took place from September 29 to October 1 1997 at the Regional Environmental Center, Szentendre, Hungary. The workshop was jointly organized within the framework of the Sofia Initiative on EIA by the State Directorate for Environment, Republic of Croatia and the Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe and was sponsored by the United Nations Environment Programme. The workshop was attended by officially designated ministerial EIA experts from: Albania, Armenia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, FYR of Macedonia, Moldova, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Yugoslavia-Monte Negro and Yugoslavia. In addition, representatives of international organizations and donor countries were participating, including: UNEP, WHO Europe, US EPA, EU-DG XI, EBRD, World Bank, REC and UNECE, as well as invited observes and speakers from the Institute for Environmental Assessment (UK), University of Manchester (UK), NGO Ecologia (Belarus), NGO Ecoline (Russian Federation), United Kingdom, Belarus, Croatia, Czech Republic and Slovakia.
