First Pan-European Environmental Telematics User Forum and Workshop,
Munich, 21-22 June 1999

Telematics Solutions
for Sustainable Development

Introduction
On 21-2 June 1999, the City of Munich hosted the 1st Pan-European User Forum and Workshop on Telematics for the Environment.

The user forum on the "Telematics Solutions for Sustainable Development", took place on 21 June and reviewed progress in the development and use of telematics for the environment and allowed for a discussion on the future needs and priorities for environment telematics as tools for sustainable urban and regional development. During the forum, good experiences in the use of environment telematics were presented and discussed in those areas of greatest concern to decision makers: environmental information to the public and experts, emergency management and disaster warning, environmental monitoring and forecasting on air and water pollution and waste management and soil pollution.

A workshop on the "Technical and Organisational Challenges of Data Management" on 22nd June focused on challenges and solutions in the collection and dissemination of information in four key environmental fields.

In the context of both the forum and workshop, presentations were given by successful projects from the European Union's telematics applications programme and other European and national research initiatives.

The two-day event, prepared by the CAPE project, gathered decision makers from many European countries, including Central and Eastern Europe, both from public authorities and the private sector. The event was attended by some 80 delegates and in part was intended to respond to public authority needs identified in a series of environment and transport surveys undertaken during 1998 by the CAPE project in the EU and CEE.
