Activities
The Italian Trust Fund advocates policies and practices that promote the use of renewable energy sources and energy efficiency in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), Turkey and the Mediterranean area.

Endorsing the conclusions of the G8 Renewable Energy Task Force, the ITF finances REC activities that promote renewable energy sources in the Mediterranean area, in the framework of the Mediterranean Renewable Energy Programme Initiative (MEDREP)(PDF file), a type II partnership launched by Italy at the Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development, aimed at disseminating modern energy services and contributing to climate change mitigation by increasing the share of renewable energy (RE) technologies in the energy mix.

The REC is a partner in the initiative, and ITF support goes to the establishment of a Training Centre for CEE and Turkey for training, networking and development of projects in the field of RE similar to, and in cooperation with, the Mediterranean Renewable Energy Centre (MEDREC) established in Tunis.

The training centre will provide assistance to CEE countries in the development of a regional policy that supports integration of RE in the global energy scheme. The starting point of REC activities is the assessment of RE in REC countries, including a policy framework, market conditions and barriers to RE deployment, and the preparation of a project portfolio with the identification of local implementing partners for selected target countries.

Pilot projects in the field of renewable energy and energy efficiency supported by the ITF are currently being implemented in Bulgaria and Croatia.
