Environmental Stakeholder Groups

The Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe fulfils its mission through encouraging cooperation among non-governmental organisations, governments and businesses. This page collects the REC's on-line content related to these stakeholder groups.

Businesses
A substantial part of environmental pressure is caused by the business sector in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). The Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe (REC) works with all stakeholders to improve the environmental performance of businesses in these countries.

Local Governments
As a result of the decentralization process in most CEE countries, local authorities became responsible for managing water supply and sewage, heating supply, waste collection and disposal and land use planning. Recognizing the challenges as well as opportunities of this process, the REC provides its capacity building assistance in the areas of the Local Environmental Action Programmes (LEAPs) and EU Accession and its implications.

Media
The mass media in Central and Eastern Europe performs the vital function of keeping the public informed about the region's environment, thereby encouraging democratic discourse and facilitating public participation in the decision-making process. The REC seeks to assist the media in this work through specialised programmes aimed at helping journalists do more to cover the region's environment.
