The conference will conclude the work of the ChangeLAB (Changing Lifestyles, Attitudes and Behaviour) partnership on the development of a 'Toolkit. Eight European partner organisations shared experience and knowledge on how to promote sustainable patterns of consumption in order to help solve increasingly serious environmental problems at home and worldwide. Growing prosperity in the West has contributed to unsustainable consumption levels in relation to fossil fuels, waste and water use. ChangeLAB responded to the urgent need for policies and initiatives that encourage, motivate and influence people to think about, and take responsibility for, their behaviour and lifestyle. The challenge for the organisations taking part in the ChangeLAB project, mainly local and regional authorities, was how to reduce forms of consumption which damage the environment, without reducing quality of life and prosperity. ChangeLAB partners have identified two particular problems: good experiences on change are confined to specific sectors (such as waste, water, transport and energy) while ChangeLAB provides a mechanism to transfers of these good practices; there is little information whether particular strategies have changed behaviour - and by how much. The partnership created a toolkit for authorities and agencies which includes a database of best practices linked to a Technique Planner (interactive software developed to help practitioners decide and match methodologies with sectors and target groups). Participants will be able to learn how to use the toolkit in practice. Furthermore, participants will be provided with a European overview of the legal and actual situation of sustainable consumption and production in the new EU member states. Funding opportunities in Hungary and in new EU member states on sustainable consumption and production projects will be presented and discussed. |
