Major Achievements:
REC Country Office Slovakia has established an excellent level of cooperation with non-governmental organisations (NGOs), ministries, local municipalities, academic institutions and businesses alike.

REC Slovakia has step by step build up its own expertise and cooperates with many experts on realisation of projects focused on sustainable development on national, regional and local level, projects of nature protection, landscape and settlements biodiversity conservation, projects focused on sustainable tourism and on environmental education projects focused on participation of public in the assesment and decision processes.

Projects

Sustainable Development of Cities and Mitigation of Impacts of Climate Change on the Quality of Life and the Environment in Urban Areas – UrbEco Footprint, LIFE III – Environment:
REC Slovakia published methodological Handbook for Elaboration of Programs of Economic and Social Development for a City/Town with Application of Strategic Environmental Assessment in Slovak and English language with French and German summary. The handbook is intended to municipalities, local and national authorities, civic organizations concerned with development planning. Another publication under final preparation is dealing with innovative calculation of ecological footprint and ecological integrity with respect to climate changes has been finalized within the project. The innovative method is reflecting the experiences from ECI, TASUS, ISSUE and Thematic Strategy on Urban Environment.

PolyDev
REC Slovakia elaborated the special territorial analyses focusing on the gaps and opportunities towards European Spatial Development Perspective in the pilot Zilina region and prepared conclusions of 4 other European regions: Veneto and Marche Regions in Italy, Ftiotida Region in Greece and (South) Primorska Planning Region in Slovenia. Result of Pilot animation of territorial analyses were presented in conference in Zilina where participated almost 200 participants..REC Slovakia as work package Leader prepared and coordinated principles and patterns of sustainable spatial development identification and its application within above mentioned pilot areas. The application works with the aid of GIS module has been prepared using innovative STeMA model suggested by University of Roma..

Strategies for Sustainable Development on the Local Level in the Slovak Rural Area of Slovensky kras: Regions 21+
REC Slovakia completed the booklet demonstrating experiences and lessons learned from pilot project implementing sustainable development strategies in selected towns of the Microregion Domica in Eastern Slovakia. With this project REC Slovakia further strengthened the experiences in implementing Local Agenda 21 in Slovakia.

Protection and Sustainable Development of Carpathians within the trans-national network
The project is assisting all Carpathian countries with the implementation of the Carpathian Convention and contributing to better management of development strategies within the Carpathian Mountain Range. REC Slovakia is the leader of the Work Package 4 (WP4) in the project. In March 2007 the REC team organized the WP4 Project partners meeting in Bratislava and in April 2007 three days long all project partners meeting in Bratislava as well. Both meetings were very important milestones and turning points in the project implementation.

Parks and Economy
REC Slovakia implemented the detailed SWOT analyses of the Kysuce region following the model of Austrian Federal Institute of Agricultural Economics. The SWOT analyses has been incorporated into DEMAP (Development Management Plan of Kysuce region). Dissemination activities on sustainable rural development were ongoing and marking local products activity has started during the stakeholders meeting In Cadca in April 3, 2007.

Green Belt
REC Slovakia as the WP3 leader prepared the educational material „From Iron Curtain to Green Belt“ together with the educational study trips for teachers. The aim of the study trips is to provide information to the teachers about the history and preserved natural values of the „Iron Curtain“. Works on the 2 feasibility studies about sustainable transport and involvement of local inhabitants in the sustainable tourism are under final implementation.
